A further factor that can affect our brains’ capacity to process information is chronic multitasking. This is an issue as it can create an increase in cortisol into different regions of the brain. Cortisol which is a stress hormone can be toxic to the brain neurons (ABC,2023). A further issue that multitasking can pose to the human brain is damage to brain density in the anterior cortex. This is the part of the brain that controls and affects human empathy, and cognitive and emotional control (ABC,2023) Both of these negative effects highlight the serious long term effects multitasking can have on the brain. And the potential long term affects social media addiction and distraction, can have on humans’ lives and brain health in the long term.
Overall, these effects such as increased cortisol in the brain, and decreased empathy and emotional control from brain density overload, highlight the importance of decreasing our social media addiction. And the importance of decreasing our attachment to technology 24/7. Mental stimulation in the form of sudoku, cards, chess, and brain stimulation games that avoid multitasking and involve strategy. Are things that we should do more in our day to day lives instead of using social media, daily if we want to improve our brains abilities, and improve our ability to stay on task and focus.
